While everyone is busy perusing this year's preliminary Nebula ballot, I'd like to point you toward Deborah Coates' short story "46 Directions, None of them North" (Asimov's, Mar06).

I thought this was a great story, written in fantastic voice, about a mother, a daughter, and some aliens landing in Alaska. As of the end of December, it had seven Nebula recs, which is almost enough to make next year's prelim ballot. If any of you remember the story, or have that issue of Asimov's at hand, I urge you to give it another look and consider reccing it before its eligibity expires at the end of this month. Thanks.

I read that story. It was exceedingly good. Talk about doom, man.

Yeah, exactly.

If it misses the ballot by one rec, I'll hold you personally responsible for not qualifying to vote for it. How's that for doom?!
