Wonder Twin Powerless

Bear with me for the set-up here. Note: I'm not promising there's any pay-off if you bear with me. I'm just asking you to bear.

So I work as an executive assistant for a leader at a large university and part of my daily job is managing his calendar. My boss and one of the vice presidents cooperate on a bunch of major university projects and initiatives so they have a weekly meeting, but when conflicts come up his admin assistant and I will reschedule that meeting. Lately, because things are kind of crazy for both of them, we’ve rescheduled about six weeks in a row. And today it was my turn to ask for a change.

The very end of our conversation went something like this…

Me: Thanks so much!

Her: Thank you for accepting all of my change requests. It seems like we always manage to make it work somehow!

Me: Fist bump! “Wonder Admin powers, ACTIVATE!”

Her: ...

Me: You’re not old enough to remember the Wonder Twins, are you?

Her: Yeah, I have no idea what you’re talking about.

Me: *awkward cough*

Her: But... I’m sure it’s amazing!

Me: Yeah.

Basically I haven’t felt this old and out of touch since... well, that would be a couple weeks ago when I was trying to explain my McArthur Park joke to Rae.

Yeah, that one was amazing too. And have I ever told you about how awesome vaudeville was?! ZOMG!!

*awkward cough*

Yeah.

Now get off my lawn.

Sadly, I get the same reaction from the new staff coming in on short-term contracts. I've gotten blank looks for everything from the Wonder Twins to the Thundercats. I really felt my age when I made an Emma Peel reference, and when I explained that she was in The Avengers, I got:

"Oh! That's going to be awesome! I can't wait for the movie to come out. Is she the chick that gets on with Thor?"

*heavy sigh*

When you're done with that cane, may I borrow it? I have a few people I want to shake it at.

In karate class once I told the girl I was practicing with to do a move "like Daniel does the wax-on, wax-off."

She said, "That movie was made before I was born."

So I kicked her.

As well you should have. I find the attitude of "It happened before I was born so it's ancient and unimportant/irrelevant" so incredibly aggravating. Bloody willful ignorance.

I work with a couple of people whose *parents* are younger than I am. That's depressing.

I remember the Wonder Twins! Depressingly, my husband does not. A shame, because I'm sure we could come up with some hilarious combinations.

Oh well, at least he loves Queen as much as I do.

If it makes you feel any better, I'm pretty sure I'm older than you, and used to be big on superhero cartoons/comics, and *still* would have had no idea what you were talking about. Presumably this was something that fell during my 25-year TV hiatus.

Yeah, only persons of A Certain Age would get that reference. I must be of an age.

Recently a local radio station playing the songs I grew up with announced they're playing "oldies". Since when did arena rock become "old"?

BTW, you know you're really old when people refer to you as "spry".

I assume her look was similar to when my Mrs. and I, at various moments of success or triumph, make fists, touch our wedding rings, and say "Wonder Married People Powers, Activate!"

Or maybe we just get the looks because we're cheesy. :)

I remember several years ago shopping for a turntable at Best Buy. I asked the teenage clerk if they carried them or not and he just gave me a blank look. "You know, a record player? . . . It plays records? . . . You know, it has a needle?" "Oh yeah," he said. "I think I saw one of those once. When I was like 4."

That makes me think of the Cartoon Network's short spoof of the Wonder Twins.

I remember the All-New Super Friends Hour (featuring the Wonder Twins), but at least it was in re-runs. So I'm not old. Nope.

Also, kids can buy alcohol if they were born in 1990. What. the. DICK?!

And apparently they changed the name of the Super Friends show, like, every year! Not the kids buying alcohol. Hanna-Barbera or whatever. ;)

Form of an ice-walker! ;)

Seriously, I get this all the time with my wife, who's both younger and far less geeky than I. I just shrug and tell her she'd better keep up, as I'm indoctrinating our 14 month old son with all the silly stuff on which I grew up. Thus, he already likes it when I sing the silly theme songs from the older Marvel cartoons ("When Captain America throws his mighty shield..." and all that jazz).

Seriously, I think it's great that so much of our childhoods are now available on DVD collections, but it does make it hard to recreate the experience of commercial breaks of the Superfriends to slip in a Schoolhouse Rock short....

I forget who got all depressed when his daughter wanted to know "if Paul McCartney was in a group before Wings" - and that depressed dad was around when my kids were born. My eldest is a year shy of 30. Ouch.

I'm not as old as you, Charlie, but at 38, I do feel ancient sometimes. I have students who were born years after the Berlin Wall fell...

And a McArthur Park joke? That was the one with the cake in the rain, I do remember that!

And I'm frequently congratulated on my Wonder Admin Powers, but then again, my boss is my age and would get all the jokes I make.
