How the Marysville Public Library Saved My Life

« previous entry | next entry »

(This is the talk I gave to the Friends of the Marysville Public Library on February 15, 2011, at the Veterans Auditorium.)

I promised to tell the story of how the Marysville Public Library saved my life, but first I want to tell the story about how the Marysville Public Library nearly killed me.

Libraries: more dangerous than they look.

You aren't drunk, are you?

(Sorry, that's just the voice I hear in my head whenever I see that phrase.)

LOL.

Nah ... I just couldn't think of a quick way to express my appreciation of your post. Connecting with people is why I write, and this does that. :-)

That was indeed a powerful story, written from the heart. Thank you.

Jeez, Charlie.

Are you going to show us the scar at BH?

And did you really say "giant-sized dick" in the public library?

Sure, I'll show you the scar. But it's been 32 years so it's faded to just a fat, pale line. But I suspect there are plenty of people who remember it from when I was young and it was more purple and garish.

And no, I don't *think* I said "giant-sized dick" even though it was in the county auditorium and not the library. You know how I am - I made the outline for the talk, and had the slides ready, but then I did the whole thing extemporaneously without notes. So I'd be hard-pressed to tell you exactly what phrases I used...

Well, I'm glad the library saved you, after it almost killed you.
