How the Marysville Public Library Saved My Life

« previous entry | next entry »

(This is the talk I gave to the Friends of the Marysville Public Library on February 15, 2011, at the Veterans Auditorium.)

I promised to tell the story of how the Marysville Public Library saved my life, but first I want to tell the story about how the Marysville Public Library nearly killed me.

Libraries: more dangerous than they look.

It was probably the subliminal messages predicting Pitt's inevitable loss to the Buckeyes in the NCAA championship game. Sorry it's going to turn out that way.

This was an awesome, page-turning (metaphorically, of course) weaving. Thanks for posting it.

Books saved me, too. From different things, but save me they did.

You (general "you") don't often think that the heroism of libraries is on par with that of, say, fire departments. But they do save lives just the same. I wish they got more credit.

Because otherwise you wouldn't get to hear all my great stories about blood and pus!

I know you're in it for the blood and pus.

Jeez, Charlie.

Are you going to show us the scar at BH?

And did you really say "giant-sized dick" in the public library?

Sure, I'll show you the scar. But it's been 32 years so it's faded to just a fat, pale line. But I suspect there are plenty of people who remember it from when I was young and it was more purple and garish.

And no, I don't *think* I said "giant-sized dick" even though it was in the county auditorium and not the library. You know how I am - I made the outline for the talk, and had the slides ready, but then I did the whole thing extemporaneously without notes. So I'd be hard-pressed to tell you exactly what phrases I used...
